For the second year on the bounce Print Hut have appionted the East Anglian Air Ambulance as it's sole beneficary to their Charitable Chain. With the help and continued support of an amazing 98% of customers and suppliers, the Ultra Wholesale Printers have now raised and handed over £2500.00
The idea of the chain for charity came about after Frank Golden's youngest son collasped with a febrile convulsion back in 2004. Though Daniel now 10, pictured left, made an immediate recovery the idea to raise money for the Air Ambulance was born.
Every time a print order is placed, Print Hut offer the option to donate just £1 which we and our wholeale print providers will match, creating £3 immediately for good causes.

Print Hut's Charitable Chain, is handing over 1500 quid today to East Anglian Air Ambulance as part of the printing company's committment to raise money for good causes. This concludes the second year of fund raising which had resulted in over £2500.00. Big thanks to every single customer who has donated £1 from their print orders. Big thanks to Marion and Charlotte for administering the fund on behalf of Print Hut and to Just Digital for providing the large format printing for the cheque.

So it was a little over 3 years ago that Print Hut was launched from a leaky glass hut just outside of St.Neots, with one laptop, one desk and no cash in the bank, but with a BIG MESSAGE!

Charitable Chain Appoints New Recipient

Print Hut's Charitable Chain has announced a new recipient for the next 12 months after raising over £1800.00 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance. The new recipient, Light Education Developement was chosen from a short list of 5 charities. All at Print Hut are delighted with the appiontment and look forward to working closely with LED. We are confident our customers will continue their brilliant support of our Charitable Chain.

LED aims to provide simple, mobile, cost effective solar lighting for families individuals and local communities. Since 2002 over 1800 lights have been distributed throughout the Cordillera Blanca and Huayhuash regions of Northern Peru, the Khumbu region of Nepal, parts of Northern India and Ethiopia.
Their Problem:
Remote mountain villages both in South American and the Indian sub-continent have little or no electrical power. Villagers are often reliant on Kerosene or locally felled timber to light their homes. Fumes can cause respiratory problems for both children and adults. Fumes can also cause eye problems and even blindness. Kerosene is expensive and often causes financial deprivation.

Their Solution:
To provide small self contained solar lighting units. Their units are user friendly, portable, sustainable and affordable.

Their Process:
Village leaders in our project areas request solar lighting support. Following recommendation from local representatives every family within the prescribed catchment area will receive a solar lamp during one of their distribution visits. Their technicians visit regularly to train and assist with maintenance and repairs.

As an open and transparent business Print Hut enjoys showing off it's performance, turnover and profits before tax to anyone who takes an interest in our model of Ultra Wholesale Printing.
Below is a summary of business activities during the months of July, August and September, commonly known as Q2;

We aren't accountants but a straight talking printing company, so cut out all the waffle and present our figures in three simple lines:
1. profits
2. Turnover
3. Profits as a % of turnover

Summary
Despite the news of doom and gloom continuing across the economy, Print Hut have yet again shown that you can substantually increase turnover and maintain reasonable margins. However, a dip in profits has to be expected and this has surfaced as an acceptable 5.63% fall.
This quarter has been about improving internal processes and order process efficiency. 'Conker' our purpose built software has undergone further upgrading allowing larger organisations to run their very own version in parallel to our production centre in St. Neots as well as improved purchasing auditing.
Prepress activity such as graphic design and artworking has been one of the most notible successes this quarter and in response we have upgraded our hardware and software with the installation of a new IMAC.
Unexpected additional costs were incurred during July with the modification to our entry security, whilst new signage has given the business a bit more visibility as foot fall within the business centre at Little Paxton, St.Neots is expected to increase during 2012. Staffing hours have also risen in response to increase business with 'CA' working 24 hours per week and plus covering additional hours where necessary.

From the modern collection of 'Christ Its Christmas', 3 Hop Robin is a card full of wintery tales and stillness, with an effective overall cold blue wash. The treatment of both the Holly and Robin are simple flat blocks of colour, originally designed as a collage, using coloured papers. Yvonne Daly later transposed this into a commercial composition, producing a series of 12 festive scenes.
The wording at the top of the card attacks convention by using an unusual blend of Upper case and Lower case together to simplify horizontals and not distract from the holly cluster, precariously hanging off the ‘s’.
This card is a real cracker and ideal for consultative professionals.

From the modern collection of 'Christ Its Christmas', 'Branch Luvbird Twits' centres around the 2 brilliantly illustrated owls.

The viewer is left investigating the composition and pondering on their relationship, which only Meredith could pull off. The thought process soon deepens with an ambiguous skyline including a big wheel, which has been likened to the 'London Eye'. The subtle glows from the candles and the lone star set a story of a cold night and pending frost. A card first launched in 1974 at the Kentucky card expo.

From the Minimal collection of 'Christ Its Christmas', MX grabbed the bull by the horns when launched in 2008 and shouts out loud in an sms 'esque' tone 'Happy Christmas'.
Short, sharp and straight to the piont is repeated with the bright, deep red, graduating through mid tones at the middle of the card to deep rubine around the edges. However the tone is pacified effectively by the fine white pencil line and gentle, abbreviated festive greeting.

The conifer offers sufficient detail to bring out a 3rd dimension which contrasts and balances the overall feel of the design. White Van Man!!

It comes with much regret that the Iconic Print Hut van that has become part of Cambridgeshire life during the past 3 years has had it’s day and very soon to be collected to spent the rest of it’s years out to pasture.

During the past 3 years it has been referred to as anything from a children’s entertainers van to a bouncy castle provider’s truck. However, the facts can’t be hidden. The loud graphics has attracted the eyes of discerning business owners wishing to purchase print from a locally run printing business. It has generated in access of £14,000 pounds worth of printed orders from 56 customers whom Print Hut refer to as van spotters!!

Now we are a bit more grown up we have decided go a tiny weeny bit more corporate and a new vehicle is on order to fill the gap, graphics haven’t yet been finalised, but we can confirm red has been replaced by white. Should be out on the roads delivering that all important print orders from 1st August.

Coated or Uncoated

We have loads of customers asking us to decide for them whether or not to use uncoated or uncoated papers. Coated and uncoated paper stocks are easily distinguished by their appearance. A coated paper has a shimmer to its surfaces and will feel smooth and waxy to the touch, whereas uncoated papers appear matt and will feel rougher or grainier to the touch. Deciding which type and finish of paper to use for a print job is very important and can drastically affect the way a printed ink appears.
As the name suggests, coated paper has a coating, usually of china clay, which gives it a smooth finish. Coated papers are available in a gloss, silk (sometimes called satin) or matt finish and are used for projects requiring a fine finish, which is why coated paper is sometimes referred to as 'art' paper. Most of the leaflets you get through your letterbox, the glossy brochures you pick up from the travel agent and the fancy programmes you buy at concerts are printed onto coated paper.
Uncoated paper doesn't have a coating and is therefore not as smooth as coated paper. You will use uncoated paper in your laser printer and photocopier. Premium quality uncoated papers are used for business stationery and are becoming increasingly popular for use in prestigious brochures and catalogues as an alternative to the more commonly used coated papers. Uncoated papers are available in a range of finishes.
If you're creating a full colour document featuring photographs or colourful illustrations, you'll get the most vibrant colours if you opt for a coated paper. Whether you choose a gloss, silk or matt finish is mostly down to your personal preference, although gloss paper will produce the most vibrant colour reproduction. Some people think that gloss is classy, others consider it to be a bit tacky. Something to consider if your document is being printed conventionally is that silk and matt papers should normally be machine sealed (a sealant is applied to the printed image to avoid it being smudged). This may add to the cost of printing - check with your print contractor. Uncoated paper can be used for full colour projects but colours tend to be less vibrant and unless you use a low quality bond paper, it could end up costing considerably more than if you'd selected a coated stock.

RGB vs CMYK

Red, Green, and Blue are "additive colours". If we combine red, green and blue light you will get white light. This is the principal behind the T.V. set in your living room and the monitor you are staring at now. Additive colour, or RGB mode, is optimized for display on computer monitors and peripherals, most notably scanning devices.

CMYK
Cyan, Magenta and Yellow are "subtractive colors". If we print cyan, magenta and yellow inks on white paper, they absorb the light shining on the page. Since our eyes receive no reflected light from the paper, we perceive black... in a perfect world!

The printing world operates in subtractive color, or CMYK mode.
In practice, printing subtractive inks may contain impurities that prevent them from absorbing light perfectly. They do a pretty good job with light colours, but when we add them all together, they produce a murky brown rather than black. In order to get decent dark colours, black ink is added in increasing proportions, as the colour gets darker and darker. This is the "K" component in CMYK printing. "K" is used to indicate black instead of a "B" to avoid possible confusion over Blue ink.
Always deliver your digital images in CMYK-mode!
One of the most common errors made by inexperienced graphic designers is submitting RGB files. As a result we must ask if they would like us to convert to CMYK before we send the files for film output. Most of the time, the colour change that will occur is slight. However, every once in a while, the colour range after conversion is compressed during the transition to CMYK mode resulting in a complete change in colour tones. Be warned that there is absolutely no way to get that deep RGB blue using CMYK, no matter how much we want to.

We stop our cars for red lights, we look at the colour of certain plants and animals to determine whether or not they are safe to touch - Immediately prior to eating food we decide weather or not it is safe to eat based solely on its colour – green potatoes – no ta !!!

Behind the scenes of 'summer sizzlers' Offer

To create our crazy priced summer sizzlers flyers, Print Hut has utilised a printing system that was once consigned to the scrape heat, but the downturn in the economy and a need to cap printing costs, a mini revival in 'risograph printing' has occured. Loads of riso printers are now finding their way back into the market. With their very low running costs and machines available to purchase outright at astonishing low costs, wholeasle printers are once again seeing the benefits of these highly versitile and technologically basic printing presses.... so how does it work?

The original artwork is scanned through the 'riso' and a master is created, by means of tiny heat spots on a thermal plate (corresponding to image areas) in a master sheet. This master is then wrapped around a drum and ink is forced through the voids in the master. The paper runs flat through the machine while the drum rotates at high speed to create each image on the paper.

This simple technology is highly reliable compared to a standard photocopier and can achieve both very high speeds (typically 130 pages per minute) and very low costs. A good lifespan for a risograph might involve making 100,000 masters and 5,000,000 copies.
The key master-making thermal head component is manufactured by Toshiba. Similar machines to Risographs are manufactured by Ricoh, Gestetner, Rex Rotary and Nashuatec. All these other brands are now owned by Ricoh.
Because the process involves real ink - like offset printing - and does not require heat to fix the image on the paper - like a photocopier or laser printer - the output from a risograph can be treated like any printed material. This means that sheets which have been through a risograph may happily go through a laser printer afterwards and vice-versa.
However, due to the relatively low technology levels, attention needs to be paid to artwork; half tones are exceptable, but only just.
For schools, clubs, colleges, political campaigns and other short run print jobs, the Risograph bridges the gap between a standard photocopier (which is easier up to about 50 copies) and using a commercial printer (easier over about 10,000 copies).
Risos have typically had interchangeable colour inks and drums allowing for printing in different colours or using spot colour in one print job. The Riso MZ series models have two ink drums allowing two colours to be printed in one pass. The latest Riso model, the HC 5500, uses a high speed ink-jet technology to achieve full (4) colour at 120 pages per minute

At Print Hut we have all the usual sales and distribution channels any modern micro biz has, however its the 'ol chestnuts' that fill us with delight through pure simplicity.
Van spotters have always provided a steady trickle of sales activity. Recently heading back to St.Neots in Cambridgeshire our 'happy van' was brought to standstill by an eager prospective customer. 20 minutes later we're printing 5000 'summer sizzler flyers' for FC hand car wash in Biggleswade.
Pure sales... and simple with no fancy e marketing in sight!

Dunster House Brochure Completed on time!

Here's a nice job then...
Its a 20pp A4 brochure printed on 170 gsm gloss in four colour process throughout. Paper was supplied by PaperCo and printed in West London by one of Print Hut's longest standing suppliers in the B1 market. 5000 copies were delivered into Dunster House's Bedford Hub. Charlotte Abbott did a brilliant job managing the campaign.
Oh and by the way I bought a Dunster House Cabin last November and it's been fantastic for all the family!!!

Leaflets are a different matter entirely, to be zero rated they must contain information and be for hand held reading and not display purposes. Must be made up of a single sheet up to A4 and not printed on a card of over 230 gsm.

Who the Dickens Owns Artwork Then?

With the demise of more TRP's (traditional retail printers) companies are approaching Print Hut with the issue of artwork being held within previous print suppliers who longer are trading.
So where do you stand with the Ownership of your artwork files, if you arent lucky enough to have a copy. This article will I hope clear up a few issues;

This is a dilema that is constantly discussed and argued in the print media.
To keep things simple we’ll stick to these two main areas: concept design and digital artwork.

1. Concept Design
All concepts developed in order to produce a design are the copyright of the designer or company who produces them. The client who’s paying the design firm or graphic designer has the right to use the final product only, not the concepts developed along the way.

2. Digital Artwork
In general terms, the digital artwork (the working files) belongs to the design firm or designer. The working files contain expertise, the ‘know how to’ of putting together all the pieces that make up a design.

The client has the right to use the final product, usually a Page Description File (PDF), which is a digital file. But it’s important to understand that PDFs are not working files.
PDFs are good as a ‘final product’ but not if a client wants to be able to modify the graphic designer’s work.

Think about Coca-Cola and its famous secret formula. When you buy a Coca-Cola drink, you’re purchasing the drink, not the formula that creates that drink. Or imagine going to a restaurant and paying for the meal then asking for the recipe because, after all, you’ve paid for the meal… Well, you get the idea.

The same principle applies to design work. You engage a designer to provide you with a solution for a specific marketing problem or need. If you also want to access the working files, that’s another issue.
So what happens if you need the working files for your art work?
Graphic designers need to lay out clear terms and conditions for their work so that their clients know what to expect.
If you need the working files for the design commission just let your graphic designer know in advance that you’d like the working files as well as the completed product, they can then charge you accordingly. Usually an extra fee is charged for giving away working files.

When you contract a graphic designer to create a design for you do you sometimes need the working files? Or would you prefer to ask the graphic designer to look after them for you so if you need to make changes in the future they can be done with the same professional care as the original version?

But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.
Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.
PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.
Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.
Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.
Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.
Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.
Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.
Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.
Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.
Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.
Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.
Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and crisps. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.
Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also
neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.
Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.
Smoking: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.
Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.
Strokes: According to research in "The New England Journal of Medicine, "eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!
Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!
So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!"

New Reception Area Completed

Free wi fi for all cutomers now plus a large plasma screen for viewing artwork etc etc. A big thanks to the MS Society In Huntingdon for helping us out with the modular Furniture.

Wiro Binding around Christmas can be scary!!!

Always filled a printer with dread; a large wiro bound order near Christmas, however this tale has a happy ending. Print Hut, the Uk's Only Ultra Wholesale Printing Company, based in St.Neots, Cambridgeshire was approached by a customer in June to commission a order of 3000 'half Canadian bound' directories, comprising of approximately 96 printer's pages. Not a problem, until the artwork arrives in late November. It is estimated 92% of wiro bind orders are completed in November and December primarily for the calendar markets.

National capacity therefore vanishes very quickly and production becomes nothing less than a scramble to complete orders on time for the end of year rush.
Print Hut had therefore to dig deep and call in a few favours from our supply chain members. We are delighted that the order has now been completed and delivery being made today with just hours to spare!!! PHEWWWW. Well done all at Print Hut

With the support of customers, suppliers and Print Hut's pledge to equal any donation, the Printing Company based in Little Paxton, St.Neots has raised over £750.00. The East Anglian Air Ambulance will be the sole beneficery of the fund. MORE than 200 jobs are at risk at a Cambridgeshire-based government agency that has helped to safeguard more than 4,000 jobs across the county.

The East of England Development Agency, a quango set up by the Labour administration a decade ago, is to be scrapped in a cost-cutting move by the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition.
Regional development agencies were set up to work with businesses to help development, employment, business efficiency and skills but the new government announced plans to abolish them, replacing them with “Local Enterprise Partnerships”, in last month’s Budget.
It is not yet clear if there is scope for the existing organisation to “transform” into the new body but a government White Paper, due to be published this summer, will set out the exact details, including time scales, of the change.
Will Pope, chairman of EEDA, said: “We are now in a time of change and clearly there is a planning and transition period to work through. In the meantime, it’s business as usual. EEDA is an effective and efficient organisation and our performance has recently been independently evaluated by the National Audit Office – concluding that we are a strong-performing organisation.
“EEDA will continue to work with local authorities and businesses to plan for the future and ensure a smooth and professional transition to the new arrangements for economic development. The key is making that process as seamless for businesses as possible.”
As part of the Chancellor’s recent £6.2billion public cuts, regional development agencies were also asked to make £293million of savings this financial year, equating to approximately 20 per cent of the RDA’s overall budget.
It has now been confirmed that EEDA’s budget will be reduced by £24.9m, some 24 per cent of the 2010/11 budget.
Mr Pope said: “Although we recognise that the government has had to make some tough decisions to reduce the budget deficit, we are obviously disappointed to lose this investment in the East of England.
“It does mean that EEDA will have to make some difficult decisions on reducing, delaying and withdrawing funding from a range of projects.
“We will be notifying those projects affected by reductions over the next couple of weeks.“This is a setback for the East of England and we fully support the call from businesses for continued investment in a region that is leading the UK’s recovery from recession.”
The Tax Payers’ Alliance, which claims that more money is spent by RDA’s helping public bodies than private companies, has been campaigning for the organisations to be scrapped for three years.
Matthew Elliott, chief executive of the Taxpayers’ Alliance, said: “These quangos have been hugely expensive but there is no sound evidence that they have succeeded. Our investigation into EEDA’s grants and performance suggests they are more of a white elephant than a productive organisation.
“It’s time the Regional Development Agencies were consigned to the dustbin of history, saving taxpayers a lot of money.”
